Moth-Wing LaughIt's like you looking at me and me looking at your ear-tips and how they turn pink when you laugh like you are laughing now, as you glance into your crystal ball and proclaim, "I like Butterflies, But Moths Aren't my Thing." And I laugh with you because that's just silly since your laugh is made of Moth-wings and your tears are the dust from their wings. The dust that coats your fingers when you stroke them. Then they can't fly anymore and you have blood on your hands. (metaphorically speaking, of course, because who cares if you kill a Moth-Wing Laugh

Perfect HairHow can you not believe someone with Perfect Hair?

No Longer EmptyThere’s a hole in my chest,
right above my left breast, that I keep filled with bubblegum wrappers and ticket stubs and tissue covered with blotted lipstick. For a while it holds, my original concrete,
but when the pelting rain comes, it becomes soggy (like receipts in a washing machine) and useless. It washes away
And leaves, exposed,
a pothole in my chest, a crater, a ditch. Then, of course, I have to start, once again, filling it up with garbage

A Heart Changed Forever

Little hands clasping the railing. Little eyes peering through the rungs and little toes curling and uncurling in the carpet. Little body wrapped in a nightgown and fleecy robe, little ears perked at the sound of George Strait crooning:

I don't know how to handle
The dream you left behind
It's like a lighted candle
Burning up my mind
At least I'm happy knowing

Little girl swaying to the music, watching the shadows on the wall move back and forth. Mama and Daddy, dancing, dancing, dancing. A low laugh from the kitchen where the radio is playing. The kitchen’s too small for the shadowy figures to do more than rock from side to side, but Daddy’s got his arms around Mama and she’s looking at him with a funny look in her eyes. A little heart is changed forever. If only Mama and Daddy knew what they’ve done to their little girl, watching from the banister. Now she’s seen what love really is, now she can’t settle for less.
